Olivia + Jimmy

How did you meet?

Jimmy and I grew up in the same town, and went to the same high school, but never officially crossed paths until we were both living in Christchurch and attending university 8 years ago. I was 18 and he was 20. I went out to an open mic night with friends, where Jimmy was singing regularly. I recognised him from our school days but he had no idea who I was until he added me on Facebookand saw that we had 60 mutual friends! We went on a movie date and started dating shortly after.

Tell us about your wedding…

I always wanted a small wedding, and loved the idea of a small destination wedding. Jimmy on the other hand always wanted a large wedding, and a ‘big, fun party’. We compromised, and decided to have a decent sized wedding in Wanaka - a place that we both love, but only a 5 hour drive from our home in Christchurch.

While wedding planning, people kept asking me “what’s your theme?” This question confused me and I would reply by saying “Umm, do I need a theme?” I was very relaxed and not really to phased by a lot of things. The important part for us, was to have a fun and relaxed day. Further in to the wedding planning, I quickly learnt what feel and ‘theme’ I wanted for the wedding – Modern, yet classic, with a romantic mountain feel.

Our guests all travelled to join us in Wanaka for the weekend from all over New Zealand, and some from overseas. Jimmy’s grandmother flew all the way from England to be with us, and this was incredibly special for us both to know that she had made the gigantic journey at the age of 87!

The wedding weekend was all I hoped it would be – with cocktails at a bar on the Friday night, the wedding on Saturday, and a lovely brunch on the Sunday morning. It was awesome to share one of our favourite parts of New Zealand with many guests who had never been there.

The ceremony was outside, with a beautiful mountain backdrop, and the reception was in the same location. We had our florist provide and style the circle archway, as well as foliage on the tables, and beautiful hanging ladders and festoons above the head table. Sitting underneath this felt like I was in a fairytale! All of our vendors were incredible, and our day ran so smoothly. We could not have asked for a more perfect day.

What was the best moment of the night?

Jimmy loves a good wedding dance floor, and is becoming known for being that guy who puts his tie around his head and dances the night away.  Our wedding was no exception! At one stage, he managed to go around the dancefloor and tie everyone’s ties around their heads. All of the photos I have of Jimmy on the dancefloor he has his tie around his head! He also got up to sing a song with the band, and we got some great photos of me dancing up the front to my new husband.

What made your wedding unique?

I know that every wedding is special, and I am biased, but our wedding just felt like the most precious day. Jimmy was in a very significant accident in 2018 when he was hit by a drunk driver while walking on the footpath. The driver was going 84kms, so he was very fortunate to have survived this. For many of our guests, the wedding was the first time that they had seen Jimmy since the accident. After such a tough year for us, to make it to our wedding day and for everything to be so perfect was pretty overwhelming and emotional! He also sang ‘To make you feel my love’ as I walked down the aisle. I nearly made it down without crying…nearly!

When I found and purchased my beautiful Zavana dress, Jimmy was in the hospital with casts on both arms, a fractured spine, a fractured pelvis, and his leg was still in pieces. My Mum was with me and all I could do when I tried on the dress was cry – both happy and sad tears!
