Thi Ly + Richard

How did you meet?

We met in high school 12 years ago, Richard had just transferred to my school. He played the guitar and I thought he was a total cutie, but we didn't talk till our high school picnic where I lost a game of cards and was dared to introduce myself to him. I went in for a handshake but Richard had greasy post hot chip fingers and didn't want to risk a bad impression so he gave me a fist bump instead. We've been inseparable ever since.

Tell us about your wedding…

Richard and I have always been very simplistic people, but it was very important to us that we were able to relax, have a fun time with our family, our friends and not really sweat the small stuff.

We had a beautiful civil ceremony overlooking the Sydney Harbour, surrounded by our nearest and dearest. Both my parents walked me down the aisle and it was so special to see Rich waiting there for me at the end. He doesn’t usually cry but seeing his eyes tear up really made my heart melt. We shared some laughs and shed some tears but it was the best ceremony I’ve ever been to. We organised a gelato cart for post ceremony entertainment, it was so much fun to see all the children and even the oldies getting in line for a scoop.

Everything about the rest of our night was perfect. We were blessed with an incredible glowing sunset, perfect weather, the best music playlist with just the right amount of 80’s and 90’s throwback, great food, drink, the best guests and most importantly my best friend was now my husband.

I often ask Rich if we could re-do it, if there was anything he would change and we both agreed that the night was perfect the way it was.

What made your wedding unique?

I don't think our wedding was really unique, but what made it special was the simplicity of it - we scaled back on a lot of the more popular wedding trends and really focused on being present and in the moment.

We took polaroids, had gelato before dinner, danced and sang the night away. Sharing those moments with the special people at our wedding was what made our wedding so special.

What was the most memorable moment of the night?

There were so many beautiful moments throughout the night, from the lovely speeches to the moves we saw on the dance floor. But for us, the best moments were when our family and friends would tell us how much fun they were having or how much love they could feel - not just from us but from everyone in the room.

The fact that they could feel that warmth, that's really the best feeling ever for us.
